Ant Identification and Control

Ant Identification and Control

Australia currently has 3 major pest species of ant found in both urban and rural areas that may need recommended ant identification and control during warmer months. Similar to any other ant species, they nest underground, in voids, storage areas or wall cavities. They are often a pest of our home environments and will enter the home in search of food indiscriminately. Ants are a nuisance mostly because they cause damage to your food supplies. They can also contaminate areas with faeces which is typically body parts of other dead colony members.

All ants go through the same four stages in their life cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Shortly after hatching from an egg, they begin life as larvae. The larvae shed their skin as they increase in size. Once they reach a certain size, spin a silk-like cocoon around itself and pupates. This is when the body metamorphoses into its adult form. It is advisable to have a qualified pest inspector for ant identification and control to interrupt this cycle for effective eradication.

Other reasons to have your home inspected for ant identification and control regularly are because they considerable concern to you, the occupants of your home. They can cause structural damage by removing small amounts of materials from concrete and brick paving that will eventually cause subsiding and cracking to your home. They are known to remove seeds from your garden soil causing less germination, as well as nests around small shrubs and trees causing undermining.

The three most common household ants here on the Sunshine Coast are:

Argentine Ants – Though they prefer sweet foods, they will also eat live and dead insects, meats, cereals, and fruit.

Black House Ants – black house ants are most likely to spread diseases like salmonella for their tendency to scavenge in household kitchens and garbage. These ants are highly attracted to sweets and are even known to go through dog excrement to find food.

Coastal Brown Ant – They prefer dry areas for nesting, where they will lay very small eggs and attack nearby food sources like meat, fruit and other sweet foods, and oily foods.
